Carotid artery blockage and stroke are caused by a hardening of the arteries. The carotid arteries in the neck feed the brain its blood supply, which is why it is important for arteries to be clean and open. Plaque can build up on the artery walls, in turn reducing blood supply to the brain. Unfortunately, sometimes the first symptom of a blockage in the carotid is a stroke. A quick, painless, non-invasive screening using ultrasound can check for blockages in the carotid arteries. A technologist applies a gel to the neck and scans with an ultrasound transducer to visualize the arteries and measure any plaque and blood flow abnormalities.
