Transgender (or \u2018trans\u2019) people \u2014\u00a0those whose gender identity doesn\u2019t match the gender they were assigned at birth \u2014\u00a0can experience gender dysphoria, defined as the psychological distress that results from the conflict between one\u2019s assigned gender and one\u2019s gender identity. Some choose to affirm their gender identity by altering their physical appearance. Given that breasts are associated with female bodies, transgender people sometimes choose to alter their breasts in order to align the way their bodies look and feel with the gender which with they identify.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Transmasculine top surgery is essentially a subcutaneous mastectomy, the procedure often performed to treat breast cancer. In a mastectomy, the breast tissue and any excess skin are removed to make a flatter chest.
