The Golden Globes and Grammys both had stars flaunting a different kind of cleavage \u2014 hello Lady Gaga! Will the trend continue at the Oscars?<\/h3>\n

At the Grammys, Lady Gaga took the underboob trend to another level with her gravity-defying top, showing the kind of reverse\u00a0decolletage usually reserved for men\u2019s magazines like\u00a0Playboy<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Maxim<\/em>. Halsey, Bella Hadid, Demi Lovato and Jennifer Lopez have also recently worn gowns that left little to the imagination, let alone room for an underwire.<\/p>\n

In 2017, cleavage isn\u2019t spilling over, it\u2019s spilling under. \u201cThe trends are always shifting, but cleavage will never go out of style,\u201d says Santa Monica\u2019s\u00a0Dr. Chia Chi Kao<\/a>, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. \u201cShowing the side or under breast just offers a fresh appeal to a classic.\u201d Adds\u00a0Dr. Peter Capizzi<\/a>, double-board certified plastic surgeon, \u201cUnderboob cleavage has a more natural appearance and is a goal for many of my patients. It allows one to play up the natural sensuality of a woman\u2019s breast in a more formal setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Plastic surgery trends may have contributed to the new fashion craze, experts say, namely the popularity of smaller, more natural breast implants. Dr. Capizzi says his patients are favoring cohesive gel gummy bear implants, which come in many shapes and sizes \u2014 the teardrop shape is particularly hot \u2014 to enhance the chest in a more natural way than standard round silicone- or saline-filled bubbles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see an increasing number of patients wanting smaller breasts,\u201d says Dr. Kao. \u201cSome women still want to go bigger than what they were anatomically born with, but not\u00a0big<\/em>\u00a0or out of proportion to their size.\u201d The surgeon also has seen patients asking to remove larger implants from years back and do a simple lift and fat transfer instead.<\/p>\n

He sees breast implant placement and choices shifting with clothing styles. In the \u201980s, when bathing suits were high cut on the hips (think Christie Brinkley), tummy tucks needed to follow those lines, for example. \u201cNow people want perkier breasts so we are putting in implants smaller in diameter and higher in projection, which creates a beautiful silhouette.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSize is not everything anymore. Collectively it\u2019s about size, shape and projection. My patients want the pencil to fall when they take the Pencil Test,\u201d in which a pencil is placed underneath the breast, says Dr. Kao. \u201cWomen used to want more of a slope to the breast, now they\u2019re increasingly asking for their breasts to be lifted and elevated.\u201d For a lift without a telltale scar, he performs a procedure called a\u00a0Bennelli\u00a0Lift, with or without implant, that leaves a fine scar only around the nipple. Requests for firmer breasts are also increasing, he says.<\/p>\n
