{"id":90,"date":"2021-05-28T19:08:02","date_gmt":"2021-05-28T19:08:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/msapc.managed3.brouser.net\/hand-center\/?page_id=90"},"modified":"2021-12-30T18:59:09","modified_gmt":"2021-12-30T18:59:09","slug":"sports-injuries","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/msapc.com\/hand-center\/hand-conditions\/sports-injuries\/","title":{"rendered":"Sports Injuries"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Pronator Syndrome<\/h3>\n<h4>Definition<\/h4>\n<p>Compressive neuropathy (dysfunction) of the median nerve at the level of the elbow that creates paresthesia (pins-and-needles) in the thumb, index, middle finger, and radial half (thumb side) of the ring finger.<\/p>\n<h4>Symptoms<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Aching pain over the proximal volar aspect (inside or palm side) of the forearm.<\/li>\n<li>Includes sensory symptoms into the palm of the hand.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms increase with repetitive pronosupination (rotation) of the forearm.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike carpal tunnel syndrome, symptoms are typically not present at night.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Pathology<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Compressive entrapment of the medial nerve at one or more of five potential sites.<\/li>\n<li>Commonly associated with medial epicondylitis, a form of tendonitis known as golfer\u2019s elbow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Treatment<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Non-surgical<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rest, activity modifications, removable splint, ice and NSAIDs (ibuprofen).<\/li>\n<li>Removable splint should avoid forearm rotation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Surgical<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indicated when non-operative treatment fails.<\/li>\n<li>Surgical decompression of the median nerve at all 5 possible sites of compression.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Mallet Finger<\/h3>\n<h4>Definition<\/h4>\n<p>Extensor tendon disruption\/rupture with or without an associated small dorsal (top of finger) fracture of the base the distal phalanx (last bone of each finger).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aLcmNMDGXaU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Symptoms<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Pain and swelling at the very distal (top) joint of the finger.<\/li>\n<li>Extension lag (drooping) of the finger with the inability to fully straighten.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JPAS0DI61zk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Pathology<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Traumatic in nature (caused by a direct blow to tip of finger or laceration to top of finger).<\/li>\n<li>Common in athletic activity when a ball strikes the tip of the finger.<\/li>\n<li>Tear\/avulsion of the extensor tendon with or without an associated fracture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Treatment<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Non-surgical<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strict immobilization\/splinting in full extension for at least 6-8 weeks.<\/li>\n<li>An additional 4-6 weeks of nighttime splinting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Surgical<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indicated when non-operative treatment fails.<\/li>\n<li>Mallet fingers that involve a phalanx fracture of more than 50% of the joint surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DxcZSLVt-wE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pronator Syndrome Definition Compressive neuropathy (dysfunction) of the median nerve at the level of the elbow that creates paresthesia (pins-and-needles) in the thumb, index, middle finger, and radial half (thumb side) of the ring finger.
