This form of tendonitis is commonly known as tennis elbow (although most people with lateral epicondylitis have never played tennis).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bUWru-ekEmU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Symptoms<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Pain on the lateral (outside) aspect of the elbow with wrist extension.<\/li>\n<li>Pain that increases with extended activity, gripping, and heavy lifting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Pathology<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Recent studies demonstrate that lateral epicondylitis is more of a degenerative tendinosis (chronic microtrauma and tendon degradation) rather than an inflammatory process.<\/li>\n<li>Common with repetitive wrist extension activities with the wrist in pronation, as in the work done by plumbers, painters, carpenters, and butchers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Treatment<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Non-surgical<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rest, activity modifications, removable wrist brace and\/or forearm strap, ice and NSAIDs (ibuprofen)<\/li>\n<li>Occupational or physical therapy<\/li>\n<li>Corticosteroid injection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Surgical<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indicated when non-operative treatment fails.<\/li>\n<li>The Nirschl procedure involves resection of the tendinosis (degraded) tissue and anatomical repair of the surrounding normal tissue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-XdXyOZNb3I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Definition Insertional tendinopathies (tendon degradation\/collagen breakdown) of the extensor tendon muscle groups of the backside of the forearm.
