The condition causes the fascia, or layer of tissue beneath the skin, to become thicker and tighten, drawing the fingers into the palm.<\/p>\n<h3>Symptoms<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Initially, a feeling of a lump or nodule of tissue in the palm<\/li>\n<li>Thick cords of tissue in the palm that can make it difficult to open the hand or place the hand in your pocket<\/li>\n<li>Bent position of finger(s)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Pathology<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The cause of Dupuytren\u2019s disease is not known<\/li>\n<li>A family member with Dupuytren\u2019s, smoking, and diabetes are risk factors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Treatment<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Non-surgical<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monitoring of the nodules (for many people, they do not progress or become painful)<\/li>\n<li>Corticosteroid injection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Surgical<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fasciotomy to divide the thickened cord(s) of fascial tissue to increase movement<\/li>\n<li>Subtotal palmar fasciectomy to remove abnormal tissue and cord(s)<\/li>\n<li>See <a href=\"\/hand-center\/patient-resources\/aftercare\/dupuytrens-release\/\">Post-op Dupuytren\u2019s Contracture instructions<\/a> for more information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Definition Dupuytren\u2019s contracture, also known as Dupuytren\u2019s disease, is a hand deformity that usually develops gradually.
