October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a good moment to learn about self examinations, and also the opportunity to schedule an annual mammogram. If you are between 40-74 (or younger if you have a family history), an annual mammogram could be a lifesaver through early detection and prevention of breast cancer. Early Detection
\n<\/b>Early detection of breast cancer is a life-saver for many women. Younger women tend to develop more aggressive breast cancer than older women, making early detection that much more important. The earlier your medical provider can detect breast cancer, the more treatment options you\u2019ll have. For every 1,000 women who receive a mammogram, five will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That\u2019s five more women who can receive life-saving treatment before their cancer becomes too aggressive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Safe and Minimally-Invasive
\n<\/b>The procedure itself takes about 20 minutes and is very safe. The minimal amount of radiation used isn\u2019t enough to be harmful to patients. While some women do experience discomfort during the procedure, the pain is short-lived. To lower discomfort during your mammogram, try to schedule your appointment the week after your period. Avoiding times when your breasts are tender will help improve the experience.<\/span><\/p>\n
