The procedure uses an endoscope &#8212; a flexible tube with a camera and light attached &#8212; to get a closer look at problems that may be occurring within your body. Images appear on a monitor, allowing the surgeon to see what the endoscope sees without making a large incision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">An endoscopy may be performed to evaluate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stomach pain<\/li>\n<li>Ulcers,\u00a0gastritis, or difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Digestive tract bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Changes in bowel<\/li>\n<li>Polyps\u00a0or growths in the colon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It may also be used to take biopsies, place stents, or treat a digestive problem by using specialized devices with the endoscope.<\/p>\n<p>Types of endoscopies are categorized based on the area of the body that they investigate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy):\u00a0 a test involving the use of an endoscope down your throat and along the length of your esophagus. This would be categorized as <strong>Upper GI<\/strong>, which also includes\u00a0the mouth, stomach, and small intestine. A <strong>Lower GI<\/strong> is an examination of your colon (<a href=\"https:\/\/msapc.com\/general-surgery\/services\/colonoscopy\/\">colonoscopy<\/a>), large intestine or rectum.<\/li>\n<li>ERCP\u00a0(endoscopic\u00a0retrograde cholangiopancreatogram): used to examine the pancreatic and bile ducts, as well as the gallbladder.<\/li>\n<li>EUS\u00a0(endoscopic ultrasound): combines upper endoscopy and\u00a0ultrasound to examine digestive tract and chest, nearby organs and lymph nodes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An endoscopy\u00a0is a nonsurgical procedure to examine and repair organs, most often used for issues with your digestive tract.
